I grew up in the city of East Wenatchee in Washington State with a four year stop-over in Richland Washington between ages 11 and 15, moved to the Spokane, Washington area after I turned 23 and have lived in the area ever since. At the age of 26 (just before turning 27), I went to Eastern Washington University and Majored in Computer Science with Minors in Math and Physics (I graduated in 1994 with a 3.3 GPA). I took a creative writing course while in college and discovered I had a talent for writing stories. I have a friend who hated a certain professor. I always imagined him sitting on a rooftop sighting a scope on that professor. That’s how the opening pages of The Voice came to be.
And of course, being an avid reader did help with my becoming a writer. I discovered Stephen King at the age of 23 and began reading everything he published. And that's how I became a writer.
About seven years ago, I discovered I had severe shoulder arthritis. This severely limits how I type, since I can barely reach the keyboard with my right hand (I use it mostly to hit the Shift key). Thus, I can only type using the index finger of my left hand. And, that's how I wrote Book II and about half of Book I of The Voice.
